🫁 Calm Down Button

One button. Instant breathing guidance and calm — for when you need it most.

Live Breathing Mindfulness Free

Why I built it

When stress hits, the last thing you want is a cluttered app with a paywall between you and relief. Calm Down Button is the simplest possible answer to one question: what if getting calm took exactly one tap?

No account, no onboarding, no push notifications. Just breathing guidance the moment you need it — then it gets out of your way.

Designed for

  • Moments of acute stress or overwhelm
  • People who want help, not a habit-loop
  • Zero-friction calm on any device

How it works

  1. You press the button.
  2. Guided breathing starts immediately — visual cues, gentle pacing.
  3. Follow along for a minute or two. That's it.

Box breathing and 4-7-8 techniques are used — both scientifically supported for activating the parasympathetic nervous system.

UX decisions

  • No login, no account
  • No upsell or premium tier
  • No notification requests
  • Works offline as a PWA
  • Accessible — respects reduced-motion preference

Core philosophy

Three principles behind every decision in the product.

Speed over features

The best calm tool is the one you actually use. Friction is the enemy — the button works in under a second.

No engagement traps

Most wellness apps are designed to keep you in them. This one is designed to get you out — calmer, faster.

Privacy by default

Nothing is tracked, stored, or sold. Your stress is your own business.

What I learned

  • Radical simplicity requires more design work, not less
  • Animation timing is everything for breathing guidance
  • Users trust an app more when it asks for nothing
  • Small tools can have outsized real-world impact

Future directions

  • Multiple breathing pattern options
  • Optional ambient sound layer
  • Haptic feedback on supported devices
  • Session history (local only, no server)

Need a moment?

Calm Down Button exists for the moments when you need to step back, breathe, and reset — without anything getting in the way.

One button. That's really all it takes.
